Your domain name choice will have a huge impact on the success of your venture.
So what makes a good domain? …and what makes a bad one?
Here’s my list of dos and don’ts
Do
- Select a domain name that is easy to spell and easy to remember
- Once you have identified a domain name, think about it, perhaps even ask friends or family what they think. Sometimes the search to find a good domain name can take a long time by which time fairly average (or worst still poor) quality domain names start to seem good. Don’t pick a domain name because its the best of a bad bunch!
- Consider purchasing variations on your chosen domain name.
eg. if you go for domainname.co.uk then think about getting domainname.com, domainnames.co.uk and domainnames.com
Don’t
- put dashes or non-essential numbers in the domain name.
eg. mydomainname.com is good; my-domain-name.com is bad
today.com is good; 2day.com or today1.com is bad
You might be thinking, “what’s wrong with my-domain-name.com?” and the simple answer is try explaining your domain name to someone on the phone. You either say “my dash domain dash name dot com” or “my domain name dot com with dashes between each word”. The lasting memory is of the dashes rather than the domain name. - go too generic
Take retailoutlet.co.uk - what does it say to you before you visit the site? What might it be selling? Why would you want to go there? Take a look and see if it’s what you thought.
Of course, if you’re doing a pure PPC campaign and you aren’t going to rely on type-ins then may be many of these rules above don’t really apply ![]()
